Face painting, Sobriety Selfies & Celebration!
This past Saturday, a group of students from the John Volken Academy attended BC Recovery Day in New Westminster. Despite the persistent rain, there was quite the turnout at the event and members of the local BC recovery community, friends and family came out to participate in the festivities.
At our booth, a couple of students were offering free face painting. This turned out to be very popular and there was a steady line all day long of people anxious to get a butterfly or flower painted on their cheek or forehead by our student artists. We also had a Photo Booth where people could put on various props to take a “sobriety selfie” to share their sober time on social media. There were also many who were simply interested in finding out more about the John Volken Academy for themselves or a loved one.
Though the rain had us soaked by the end of the day, it was a positive experience for everyone involved. We were proud to celebrate recovery and to stand for such a good cause in the community. As was said at the event, too often we focus on the ones who succumb to their addictions and we forget to recognize the many that are living in active recovery. We are proud to be among those success stories!
