John Volken Academy Alumni Mat Fee Completes His Cross Canada Single Speed BMX Bike Ride
October 8th 2019
Mat Fee cycled his final mile Tuesday October 8th 2019 and capped it off by dipping his BMX bike in the ocean just below mile 0 in Victoria, Canada. Friends, family, volunteers and employees of the Academy were in Victoria to help mark the end of the journey. The team met with Provincial politicians at the Parliament Buildings whose portfolio covers Mental Health and Drug and Addiction.
Mat and his support Team of Jon and Courtney (who joined a month later) left Halifax May 1st and traveled over 7 thousand kilometers (more than 5 thousand miles) to complete the cross-Canada trip. Mat rode through heat waves, rainstorms, wind, bugs, fixed innumerable flat tires, cycled up and down mountains, and dealt with countless days of sore muscles to finish the ride.
The wrapped RV brought a lot of attention to the stigma attached to recovery and mental health. Along the way the team spoke to first responders and citizens about their experience of recovery.
The purpose of the trip was to highlight what individuals in recovery can do as well as bring attention to the John Volken Academy and the existence of a long-term therapeutic recovery community. We congratulate the team on a job well done and a safe return!
